December/January 2006 - 2007

Dear Friends of Helping Hands,

I would like to start the New Year off by introducing to you MacDonald Motsumi, or “Mac” as we know him.  Mac is a member of the Helping Hands staff.  Helping Hands faces the year ahead knowing that we will face heartbreaking crises in the lives of many, many people, but, this is what we do – intervene in order to bring hope for a future -  so we plan for these crises.  I could not take Helping Hands confidently into the year without Mac.  He is more than a staff member.  He is a part of the life blood of Helping Hands.  Mac has a quiet, unassuming way about him, yet every day he accomplishes the impossible.  He drives patients to clinics and hospitals, many of whom are on their death beds.  He treats each one with such gentleness and care.  He delivers food to the feeding projects with such dignity and grace, never making the children feel like they are charity cases but rather as if they are all part of one big family.  He interacts with the people of the village, whether they be tribal leaders or the poorest of the poor, with respect and honor.  MacDonald is one of those everyday heros that I admire with all my heart.  It is people like him that make Helping Hands an organization that I am immensely proud to be a part of.   MacDonald was sent on a month long training course at the end of last year (Ambulance Driving and Advanced Care Giving).  He is very pleased with his achievement and I am extremely happy to see him empowered with a new skill.  His “ambulance” at the moment is a tiny little Pick-up, but he does miracles with it.  As we go into the New Year, I salute MacDonald and the rest of the team that makes up Helping Hands.  This includes all our faithful supporters.  Thank you for being a part of MacDonald’s team.

With kind regards
Michelle Tessendorf
